Orchha is very small village situated on the bank of river Betwa, specifically in the northern part of Madhya Pradesh. This lovely town is totally offbeat destination embedded with many beautiful monuments and temples. River, fort, temples and cute houses really make you to stroll in the town; which is a worth visit.
The best time to walk thru the lanes of this place is at the Sunrise or as the Sun sets; the view of monuments and river are panoramic at this hours. At other timings this town is pretty much wrapped up in the laziness with fewer activities.
The best way to explore this place is either by walking or cycling which you can rent at very nominal cost. Though there are great places to visit on Orchha, I would like mention of the place” Friends of Orchha”. It’s a NGO that offers home-stays and best experience to explore village life that too with comfort!
I was charged with my morning tea and ready to explore this small town. All I wanted to is to experience this place. People here are very friendly and everyone greets you with wide smile. You instantly feel connection with the place and people here.
People here know the true meaning of “Atithi Devo Bhava” (which means ‘the guest is equivalent to God’ or ‘be one for whom the guest is God’). They will call you to show cozy houses, share their experiences and the nature of the work they do. I loved the fact that people here are very interested and keen to click their pictures. The life here is slow; most of their earnings come from tourism only. They like to meet people from various countries and learn the new forms of art which shows their desire to grow in life.
I really enjoyed being there. You feel privileged when people call you to see their houses and offer free tea. All they want is to connect with the outer world. I was happy to be part of their conversation. This place can only be felt rather than expressing it in words.
After a good walk, I had a breakfast at Ram Raja Café which is very famous among tourists as well as locals. By the way this food joint is also known by its owner’s name Parbatlal Ketla, so don’t get confused. With the happy heart I indulged myself in tasty yummy Ghee Parathas and curd.
This town is great example of laid back town which still has a glory of Bundela Dynasty. It has many things to offer you and does not disappoint you in any way. My trip to Orchha was really great and with all happy memories I left for my next destination.
